Photovoltaic panels are more commonly known as Solar Cells. They farm the energy from the sun to produce electricity. These cells run silently, contain no moving parts, require no conventional fuels and therefore produce no pollution.

Photovoltaic cells are manufactured from materials similar to those in micro-chips. Sunlight is harnessed by these materials, releasing electrons from their atoms, which flow through the material producing electricity. This system of harnessing light (photons) to produce electricity (voltage) gives us the name photovoltaic.
A standard photovoltaic's module is normally comprised of around 40 cells; a photovoltaic array is usually made up of 10 modules. An array is mounted in a fixed south facing position, typically 10 to 20 arrays are required to produce sufficient energy for a domestic property.

The property continues to be connected to the electric supply and any deficit in power produced is taken from grid and visa versa any surplus is supplied to the grid. Options include uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or battery backup to provide cover during a power failure.
